Red Velvet Cake

Ingredients

1 tsp vinegar
1 tsp baking soda
1-1/2 cups sugar
2 whole eggs
1 cup buttermilk
2-1/2 cups All purpose white flour
1 oz red food coloring
1 oz water
1/2 cup shortening
2 tsp cocoa
1 tsp salt
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
4-1/2 tablespoons All purpose white flour
1 cup milk
1-1/2 sticks margarine
1-1/2 cups sugar
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
3/4 cup shortening

Preparation

Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.

Mix vinegar and baking soda; set aside (this is the last thing you add to mixture).

Mix sugar, eggs, and buttermilk. Mix well. Add remaining ingredients.

Bake in two 9-inch round cake pans coated with oil and flour, so cake will not stick. Bake for 20 - 25 minutes.

After the cake has cooled completely, split the layers horizontally to make 4 layers.

In saucepan, heat flour and milk until thick, stirring constantly. Let cool. Gradually add the margarine, sugar, vanilla, and shortening to mixture. Ice cake.
